The following are just five of our absolute favorite VR mods you can play right now on PC VR and Meta Quest headsets (in no particular order).

Gunman Contracts – Chapters 1 & 2 (PC VR)

I should warn you up front, this isn’t the only Half-Life: Alyx mod included on the list. But that’s what you get when you put an extensive amount of creator tools in the hands of the community.

Gunman Contracts – Chapter 1 – The Extraction, puts you in the shoes of a highly-trained gun-for-hire tasked with saving an innocent woman from the clutches of a ruthless human trafficking group. Unlike Half-Life: Alyx, Gunman Contracts offers a more grounded action experience centered around gritty, close-quarters combat.

Chapter 2 – Art of War ups the ante even further with bigger environments and badder enemies. Players fight their way through a private art exhibition John Wick-style as they hunt down the criminal mastermind behind the illegal human trafficking operation. There’s action, danger, and plenty of cinematic moments.

R.E.A.L. VR (PC VR)

Prolific VR modder Luke Ross has been making waves with his lineup of R.E.A.L. VR mods for PC VR headsets. Ross recently released his highly-anticipated VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077 on PC, bringing CD Projeckt Red’s cyberpunk VR adventure to life on VR headsets for the first time. Similar to Ross’ past VR releases, the mod does not feature support for motion controls, only 6DoF head movement.

Like all of Rosss’ R.E.A.L. VR mods, you will need to use a mouse & keyboard or gamepad in order to play. Still, this is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the chaotic streets of Night City. Other R.E.A.L. VR mods include Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia 3, Grand Theft Auto V.

You will need to sign up for Ross’ Patreon ($10 per month) in order to access the mods. R.E.A.L. mods are compatible with any SteamVR headset as well as the Meta Quest via Link or Air Link.

You will need to own a copy of each game on PC in order to play.

QuestCraft (Meta Quest)

QuestCraft brings the full Minecraft 1.18 experience to the Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2; no PC is required in order to play. The mod supports the Touch motion controllers, allowing you to select in-game objects and navigate the UI with ease.

As if that weren’t cool enough, there’s support for cross-play, allowing you to meet up with friends online or hop into a random server and craft alongside strangers. That said, the setup could prove a bit intimidating for newcomers, especially if you’re looking to play online.

We recommend using the app SideQuest to help simplify the installation process. For more information we recommend you check out our official how-to guide here.

Return To Rapture – Chapter 1 & 2 (PC VR)

Fans of 2K Games’ legendary Bioshock franchise are in for a treat with Return To Rapture – Chapter 1. This expertly-crafted mod for Half-Life: Alyx brings the underwater metropolis of Rapture to life in VR for the first time.

Chapter 2 takes the experience even further with new Splicer enemies alongside the original Combine threat. In addition to gunplay, players can harness the power of Plasmids to unleash devastating attacks on any enemies unfortunate enough to be standing in their way. The mod offers players 24 massive levels to explore and roughly 15 hours of gameplay.

Whether you’re a die-hard Bioshock fan or simply a fan of expertly-crafted level design, the Return To Rapture series is definitely worth your attention.

Star Wars – The Outer Rim (PC VR)

Of all the Star Wars VR content currently available on VR headsets, The Outer Rim might be our favorite so far. This fan-made total conversion mod for Blade & Sorcery is jam-packed with content guaranteed to please even the most devoted Star Wars fan.

Available free via Nexus Mods, The Outer Rim features over 250 custom items from the Star Wars universe, including blasters, helmets, and customizable lightsabers. Players can fight custom AI enemies across multiple Star Wars-themed levels and use Force-like abilities such as “Push” to interact with characters and the environment.

Some of my favorite moments in a VR headset have been duking it out in fast-paced lightsaber duals aboard an Imperial Light Cruiser. Fans of Star Wars and sci-fi, in general, will absolutely want to check this out.
